One of Lake Murray’s most precious gems is the wondrous Lake Murray located just west of Columbia.
The lake is a wonder to behold, covering over 50,000 acres and lapping against approximately 650 miles of shoreland. Many residents of Columbia don’t realize that this beauty and all of its opportunities practically lay in their own backyard.

Lake Murray History
The history of Lake Murray dates back to the early 20th century. The Lake Murray Dam, also known as Dreher Shoals, was constructed between 1927 and 1930 as a source of hydroelectric power. Lexington Water Power Company, now known as South Carolina Electric and Gas/Dominion Energy, built the dam with William S. Murray acting as one of the primary engineers. His work earned so much respect and acclaim that the lake was eventually named after him.
As much room was needed for this massive project, the company bought many properties and homes, closing the gates to numerous preexisting communities and neighborhoods. However, the vibrant life and appeal of the finished lake drew even more families to settle in the area in the following years.
Lake Murray Adventures
Yet it is fascinating to many to discover what still lies beneath the lake today — everything from abandoned communities, to World War II bomber airplanes, to graves, to railroad cars! Various groups such as Scuba John’s Dive Shop offer scuba lessons for those who want to explore the depths of Lake Murray. But today, there is thriving activity and life above the surface, too.
In and around Lake Murray, you’ll find any number of adventures to embark upon! The lake functions as a hub for fishing, boating, sailing, kayaking, golf courses, hiking trails, and more. And it is only a short drive from other Columbia attractions such as the Riverbanks Zoo and the city’s multiple rivers.
Lake Murray Neighborhoods
Numerous communities surround the expansive lake, each with its own unique appeal. Chapin boasts many lakefront homes, giving residents access to fishing and boating, as well as highly rated schools and a more small-town, intimate feel. Residents of Irmo can have the best of both worlds, with close access to Lake Murray as well as the other more developed shopping and dining areas of Columbia. Lexington is a more populated town with lots of young families and proximity to the recreational opportunities of Lake Murray. If you are looking for a home in the Midlands, each of these areas is worth a serious look!
There is much to love about Columbia, South Carolina, and Lake Murray is certainly a big part of its attraction. Make plans to visit soon — you won’t regret it!
