Truly making the most of their space, Forest Acre’s quaint little park is bound to be a hub for community-building, recreation, and enjoyment for people near and far.
In April of 2024, Forest Acres of Columbia was proud to announce the opening of its newest park: Gills Creek Memorial Park! This plot of land may be small, but it packs a punch!

The history behind Gills Creek Memorial Park blossoms out of tragedy. The land on which it rests was completely flooded in 2015, and for some time after the waters subsided, the city wondered if they would do anything to recover or repurpose the property. But when a few officials alongside of Mayor Thomas Andrews surveyed the land in 2018, observing the scenic view of some distant waterfalls framed by green boughs and branches along the creek bed, a dream began to take shape. This spot was too good not to share.
The pristine park is now open to the public and brimming with possibilities. During these hot South Carolina summers, you can take your children to enjoy the splash pad and wide open grassy lawn. If you need a quiet spot to rest and reflect, there is a bench swing waiting for you and wide pier overlooking the creek. Learning from history, this pier is constructed from flood resistant wood and looks as lovely as it is sturdy. Or if you’re looking for a fun outing with friends, pick up a pizza from the nearby Schiano’s Italian restaurant and enjoy an evening picnic in the park with its string lights dazzling overhead.

Leaders also wanted this space to show their appreciation for those in law enforcement who have sacrificially served the community. The park is home to a memorial that specifically honors two Forest Acres police officers — Greg Alia, who died while on duty in 2015, and Richey Finch, a patrolman who died during a traffic stop in 1974. The memorial rock was selected by Officer Greg Alia’s widow, Kassy Ray Alia, and Chief Don Robinson. It reads John 15:13: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Already this park has received a lot of love and attention. Forest Acres moved its farmer’s market to the park, and its vendor registrants have increased since the event’s notable success. Mayor Andrews foresees the park hosting small concerts and other gatherings, but most importantly, he wants it to be a center for building community.
