Now is a great time to visit South Carolina’s last remaining covered bridge. I took a drive up there this week and was in awe of the beauty of the changing leaves and glorious surroundings. Campbell’s Covered Bridge is located in Northern Greenville County and was built between 1909 and 1911. It stretches across Beaverdam Creek, with tables and benches providing a perfect opportunity for a picnic lunch. Charles Irwin Willis constructed the bridge out of pine and named it after Alexander Lafayette Campbell, who managed the grist mill, near the bridge. The state park offers plenty of parking and the bridge is but a short walk from the car.

The bridge is also surrounded by an 18-acre park with a nice walking trail that starts near the bridge. The trail is not quite a mile long and is a great length for children, including furry ones. This lightly traveled park would also make a perfect spot for photos! Depending on the time of the year, children would love to splash in the slow flowing creek that runs under Campbell’s Covered Bridge.
One final thought. Make the most of your mini escape and stop by one of the local coffee shops on your way. I passed several on the way to and from the park and plan to go back and enjoy a cup!
